Digital Twins for Smart(er) Cities

Alex Shalash
Founder and CEO at HeroEngine World

The rapid proliferation of IoT sensors and Smart Devices has given birth to the concept of Smart Cities, where the data they collect provide greater insights into the functioning of cities and can be used to improve many aspects of citizens' lives. The current focus of very large Smart City projects, such as Smart Dubai and Singapore's Smart Nation, is on the deployment of extensive IoT networks for the collection of vast amounts of data. According to a number of officials involved in these projects the main challenge they are facing is the lack of a unifying platform, a so called "CityBrain", to visualize and transform the collected data to provide actionable intelligence to improve the functioning of their cities.

Smart City projects sit at the intersetion of IoT, 3D visualization, AI, Big Data, and simulation. Game development tech could be the answer to the missing unifying platform, the "CityBrain", to drive data driven actionable intelligence. Using HeroEngine cities will develop virtual "Digital Twins" of themselves, which will live alongside and visualize the processes within cities in real time driving forward- and backward-looking simulations. These simulations will enable city managers to better understand their cities' exploration of possible changes to improve citizens' lives, drive energy efficient and improve city function.
